Is Valutra bookkeeping software?
No. Valutra focuses on cashflow planning and forecasting and does not replace accounting or tax tools.
How do plan items and payments work together?
You plan with plan items. When actual payments exist, you can connect them to instances.
Important rule (no double counting):
- if a payment exists, the payment wins
Note: Features around business, projects/contracts, and VAT are typically relevant for freelancers/self-employed and companies. If you are employed, this is usually not relevant.
Why can’t I add payments in the future?
In Valutra, payments represent what actually happened (today/past). For future events, use plan items (and their instances) via Plan.
Details: Payments & reconciliation
What if the payment date or amount differs from the instance?
That’s normal (e.g. a late payment or a changed amount).
- A payment can be linked to a specific instance.
- The payment date can differ from the planned date.
- Once linked, the payment wins (no double counting).

Why do the numbers in the current month look “too small”?
In the forecast, the current month shows only the remaining amount.
In practice:
- planned amounts minus payments already recorded
Details: Balance
Why does my forecast differ from reality?
Forecasts are based on the current recorded state of your plan items and payments.
Missing, late, or unreconciled payments will cause deviations. Regular reconciliation helps keep results realistic.

Can I separate business and personal finances?
Yes. Use multiple bank accounts and clear naming.
Do you support VAT planning (Germany)?
Yes, as planning support. See VAT.
What does “Forecast included” mean in the VAT modal?
If a period contains recurring business instances for which there is no payment yet, their VAT effect can be included as a forecast.
The VAT modal then shows two variants:
- tax due with forecast
- tax due without forecast
Details: VAT overview
How can I exclude open instances from the VAT forecast?
If you don’t want open instances included in the VAT summary, create a payment with amount 0 for the affected instance and link it to that instance. It will then count as “paid” and no longer be treated as forecast.
Details: VAT overview
How do category totals work in “Payments”?
In Payments & reconciliation, you can open the Category totals section.
- Only payments with an assigned category are included.
- “Remaining/Open” shows instances in the period that do not have a linked payment yet.
- “Total” is payments + open instances.
Details: Payments & reconciliation
How do I disable “Projects & contracts”?
If you don’t plan income via projects/contracts, you can disable that area in User settings (option “Enable projects & contracts (for freelancers/self-employed)”).
Details: Projects & contracts
How do I set starting balances correctly?
Your forecast starts from your starting balances. If they’re wrong, the entire projection will be off.
A good order to check:
- starting balance (right bank account, plausible date)
- plan items (date, direction, amount)
- linked payments (payments override planning)

How do I mark plan items as retirement-relevant?
You can mark plan items as retirement-relevant and store a separate “amount in retirement”.
Important:
- The “amount in retirement” is a separate assumption used for the retirement view.
- The plan item itself remains unchanged.
Why are some features limited?
Valutra can be used for free. Some features are limited by count or forecast horizon.
Good to know:
- No data is deleted.
- Existing calculations and views remain visible.
- Limits only affect new entries, changes, or extensions.
For the full overview, see: Usage & limits.
What happens if I switch back to limited usage?
When you switch your usage tier, all existing data remains.
That means:
- No entries are deleted.
- Longer calculations remain visible.
- Changes are only possible if they fit within the current limits.
Details: Usage & limits.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, in User settings.
Important:
- Deletion is irreversible.
- All user data is deleted (accounts, transactions, payments, settings, etc.).
- Recovery is not possible.
